GLOBAL TROPICAL CYCLONE TRACKS - APRIL 2001
!!!! IMPORTANT -- PLEASE SEE NOTE AT END OF FILE !!!!
*************************************************************************
ATLANTIC (ATL) - North Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico
NOTE: The following track was supplied by David Roth, a meteorologist
employed at the Hydrometeorological Prediction Center. Just a
few days ago, the author received a visible satellite image of
a well-developed occuded cyclone in the Atlantic on 8 April, sent
by John Wallace of San Antonio, Texas. I have forwarded this
image to David Roth and asked for his opinion on whether it could
be considered a hybrid or subtropical cyclone. If David feels
that it does qualify and provides a track, I will include it with
the cyclone tracks file for May.

Note: System formed along a dying stationary front, then drifted
aimlessly to the southeast until late on the 26th, when the surface
steering around the surface ridge finally moved it southwestward.
The tracking information is based on MPC maps with emphasis on ship
observations. The only ship to report 35-kt winds (at 26/1800 UTC)
was situated in the tightest gradient between the LOW and an adjacent
HIGH. Many 25-kt ship reports were received on the 26th and 27th.

NORTHWEST PACIFIC (NWP) - North Pacific Ocean West of Longitude 180
NOTE: The tracking information for Northwest Pacific Basin tropical
cyclones is based primarily upon operational warnings from the
Joint Typhoon Warning Center of the U.S. Air Force and Navy at
Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Comparisons were made with track coordinates
given in advisories from the meteorological services of Japan
(JMA) and the Philippines (PAGASA). In general, whenever the
center position differed by more than 40-50 nm from JTWC's, an
entry was made in the Remarks column.
The 1-min avg MSW were taken from the JTWC advisories while the
10-min avg MSW were obtained from PAGASA's advisories. Apparently
JMA did not issue any bulletins on the following system; hence,
there are no central pressure estimates.
Michael V. Padua, owner of the Typhoon 2001 webpage, sent me the
PAGASA track for this system--a special thanks to Michael for his
assistance.

NORTH INDIAN OCEAN (NIO) - Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea
NOTE: The tracking and intensity information for the following system
was supplied by Roger Edson of the University of Guam, formerly
a forecaster with JTWC. No warnings were issued on this system
by either JTWC or IMD, although JTWC mentioned the disturbance
for several days in their Tropical Weather Outlooks and issued
a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert for the system. The cyclone
actually started in the Gulf of Thailand (NWP basin) and tracked
across the Malay Peninsula into the Andaman Sea. Since it spent
the majority of its life and reached its peak intensity in the
eastern Bay of Bengal, I am including it here as a North Indian
Ocean system.

for the benefit of WMO Region 1 countries, assigning a Dvorak rating of
T4.0 to this system with peak 10-min mean winds estimated at 55 kts. The
first JTWC warning noted that the tropical cyclone was extremely compact
and that the Dvorak classification could possibly be unrepresentative of
the true strength of the system.

Note #3: Winds locally reaching 30 kts in southern semicircle.

!!!!!! IMPORTANT NOTE - PLEASE READ !!!!!!
It has been brought to my attention that I should repeat in the
cyclone tracks file the caveat which is included in the Author's
Note at the end of the cyclone summaries. The tropical cyclone
tracks which I prepare are based upon the operational warnings/
advisories/advices/bulletins from the various tropical cyclone
warning agencies around the world. Users of these tracks should
be aware that they are preliminary and subject to revision during
post-seasonal analyses of the cyclones by the forecasters and
analysts at the several warning centers.
For the Atlantic and Northeast Pacific basins, official tropical
cyclone reports and "best tracks" can be found at the website of
the Tropical Prediction Center/National Hurricane Center:
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov>
The Joint Typhoon Warning Center's website contains links to their
Annual Tropical Cyclone Reports (ATCR) which include that agency's
"best tracks" for tropical cyclones in the Northwest Pacific basin,
the North Indian Ocean, and the Southern Hemisphere:
http://199.10.200.33/jtwc.html>
For the actual Best Tracks files, click on the link for Best Tracks
(in the menu on the left side of the screen) and follow instructions.
In the ATCR for 2000, the Chapter 5 tab contains verification
statistics of JTWC warnings for all the 2000 tropical cyclones in the
Northwest Pacific, North Indian Ocean, and the Southern Hemisphere.
There are gaps in the Best Tracks presented here for certain cyclones
during periods in which no warnings were being issued.
