GLOBAL TROPICAL CYCLONE TRACKS - APRIL 2000
SOUTH INDIAN OCEAN (SIO) - South Indian Ocean West of Longitude 90E
NOTE: The tracking coordinates, 10-min avg MSW, and estimates of
central pressure were obtained from the RSMC La Reunion's
advisories, while the 1-min avg MSW were taken from JTWC's
warnings.
A special thanks is due to Roger Edson of the University of
Guam for performing an analysis of the unusual system in the
Mozambique Channel during the second week of April which was
carried by La Reunion as a subtropical cyclone. An alternate
track provided by Roger is included below following the track
based upon La Reunion's warnings. A special thanks also to
Patrick Hoareau of Rennes, France, for typing and sending to
me the track for Tropical Cyclone Hudah and the MFR track for
the subtropical cyclone.

Note #1: This system was classified by MFR as a subtropical cyclone
throughout its lifetime. JTWC also referred to the system as a hybrid
or subtropical disturbance. No warnings were issued by JTWC but three
Formation Alerts were issued.
Note #2: The 40-kt winds referenced at these times were for possible
peripheral winds in the southern semicircle.

Note #1: On 7 and 8 Apr system displayed a circulation but was indirectly
part of an old frontal boundary/extratropical system; hence, the classi-
fication as a subtropical LOW. A south-to-north low-level wind surge
existed with winds in excess of 30 kts to the system's west. The MSW
values given are an attempt to define winds in the vicinity of the LLCC.
Note #2: In Roger's opinion, from 09/0000 UTC through 15/0000 UTC system
was purely tropical: it was being convectively maintained, was over warm
SSTs, and was isolated from any extratropical system.
Note #3: Visible, infrared, and TRMM imagery all suggested that the
maximum intensity occurred around 12/1200 UTC.
Note #4: From 15-17 Apr system seemed to "bounce" off southwestern
Madagascar and drift southward. The circulation was still obvious in
scatterometer data but no clouds were depicted in the imagery.

AUSTRALIAN REGION (AUS) - From Longitude 90E Eastward to Longitude 160E
NOTE: The tracking information presented below was obtained from
operational warnings issued by the Tropical Cyclone Warning
Centres at Perth, Western Australia; Darwin, Northern Territory;
and Brisbane, Queensland. JTWC warnings were utilized for
making comparisons and for supplying information for times when
the Australian warnings were unavailable. The 10-min MSW values
were obtained from the Australian warnings while the 1-min MSW
values were assigned by JTWC.
The tropical cyclone warnings from Perth report the analyzed
cyclone positions at 0400, 1000, 1600, and 2200 UTC instead of
the more familiar 0000, 0600, 1200, and 1800 UTC utilized by most
TC warning agencies.
A special thanks is due to Matthew Saxby of Queanbeyan, New
South Wales, Australia, for sending me tabulated tracks for
the two tropical LOWs late in the month which were designated
as Tropical Depressions 20F and 21F by the Fiji TCWC when they
wandered east of 160E.

Note: Gales were reported in association with this system during both
phases of its life, but were well away from the center in the southern
semicircle due to a tight pressure gradient with a HIGH to the south.
Dvorak numbers from JTWC and KGWC did not exceed T2.0 for this depression
and were T1.5 or less most of the time.

SOUTHWEST PACIFIC (SWP) - South Pacific Ocean East of Longitude 160E
NOTE: The tracking and intensity information for Southwest Pacific
Basin tropical cyclones was taken from real-time operational
warnings issued by the Nadi TCWC, Fiji for positions north of
25S and from the Wellington, New Zealand office for positions
south of 25S. Warnings from JTWC (west of 180) and from
NPMOC (east of 180) were utilized for the purpose of making
comparisons and for supplying information for times when the
Nadi or Wellington warnings were unavailable. The 10-min avg
MSW values were taken from the Fiji or New Zealand warnings
while the 1-min avg MSW values were obtained from the JTWC or
NPMOC warnings.
A special thanks to Alipate Waqaicelua, Chief Forecaster at the
Nadi, Fiji, TCWC for sending me a summary and tabulated track
for Tropical Cyclone Neil.
